Join CAIR Washington and Northwest Film Forum (NWFF) for an all-day, immersive filmmaking workshop for Muslim high school students! In this workshop, you will explore the art of capturing your narrative through the versatile medium of filmmaking. Working with local filmmaker and poet Hanan Hassan, you’ll learn how to mix media into film, record creatively using DSLR or phone cameras, and edit using Adobe Premiere. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a finished film that will be published on NWFF’s website AND screened at its annual Children’s Film Festival!

Hanan Hassan (she/her/hers) is a poet, organizer, and interdisciplinary creative residing in Seattle by way of Richardson, Texas. She is currently an Assistant Education Programmer at the Northwest Film Forum. Her work is rooted in her experiences and upbringing as Somali diaspora. Hanan’s film work has earned recognition in 3+ festivals and her poetry was recently featured in the Summer 2019 issue of Hargeisa Literary Magazine , a publication of the Republic of Somaliland. In her free time she enjoys creating art, cooking and brainstorming comedy skits. She is currently working on a poetry documentary through the PNW Afro X Research Fellowship and is compiling her first poetry book Desert Flower Bloom.

Skate Filmmaking Workshop (Ages 10-14)

Teens 15+ who are interested in attending can email about volunteering at the workshop.

Capacity: 12–15 students

**Skate Like a Girl will be present to share info about skating opportunities for youth!**

This workshop will cover all the bases about skateboard filmmaking including camera setups, operation, and editing. You’ll learn about the history, pros/cons of cameras, resources, & distribution. Students will be allowed to demo camera gear and techniques with the instructor. Leave with the knowledge and inspiration to make a great skate film.

For maximum safety, instructors (not students) will be doing all the skating during filming, but students are encouraged to bring their own recording devices. Camcorders and iPads will also be provided for practice, and students will learn how fun and easy it is to make amazing skate films with phones or other cameras they have access to.

* NOTE FOR PARENTS: You are welcome to sign your child in and return at the end for pickup. There will also be a comfy space adjacent to the workshop for family members to wait and watch the fun.

Direct Cameraless Animation Workshop (All Ages)

Age range: All Ages; parents/guardians are welcome to attend with children at no additional cost. Youth under 12 must be accompanied.
Capacity: 12–16 students
$15, $30, or $45 sliding scale tuition. Those who can afford to pay at higher price point are encouraged to do so, to create more accessibility for those who might not.
